BRUCE LEE NEWS AND TRIVIA

(July 22, 2003)

  • A noted brawler in Hong Kong, Lee received formal training in wing chun under legendary sifu Yip Man. He later trained in a variety of arts before creating his Jeet Kune Do style.
  • Developed his martial art style called Jeet Kune Do (Way of the Intercepting Fist) which is more of an idea of being flexible and practical with learning martial arts.
  • He is considered the greatest martial artist of the 20th century.
  • His students in Jeet Kune Do martial arts included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Steve McQueen and James Coburn.
  • Suffered a serious back injury while attempting a deadlift. During his recuperation, he wrote several books on the martial arts.
  • Was an accomplished dancer and Hong Kong cha cha cha champion.
  • Weighed only 128 pounds at the time of his death.
  • While the THE GREEN HORNET TV series was in production, Bruce made several promotional appearances as Kato, but made a point to never do the standard martial art stunts like breaking boards which he felt had nothing to do with what the martial arts are about.
  • The fight on the bridge between Spike and Abdul Hakim in COWBOY BEBOP (1998, episode 2, STRAY DOG STRUT, is an homage to the fight scene in GAME OF DEATH (1978) between Bruce Lee and Kareem Abdul-Jabar.
  • A gag credit at the end of HOT SHOTS (1991), Things you can do after the movie, is the same as a gag credit at the end of the his sendup in THE KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE (1977).
  • A scene was edited from TANG SHAN DA XIONG (1971) to avoid an X rating due to violence. At the ice factory at night, he was to pick up a saw and split a man's head open. In the widescreen version, you can just see the man fall over with the saw handle visible.
  • Choreographed his own fight scenes in JING WU MEN (1972) but quit working with Lo Wei because of the movie's racial content and personal disagreements after this movie.
  • He had filmed about 10 minutes worth of fight scenes for GAME OF DEATH (1978) when work was suspended to allow Lee to work on ENTER THE DRAGON (1973). Lee died in unusual circumstances before he could return. Six years later, director 'Clouse, Robert' fleshed out a feature around the original footage with a new cast including two stand-ins for Lee. By this time, however, this sequel to the events in the then unreleased GAME OF DEATH (1978) had been completed and released in Hong Kong. Following the popularity of GAME OF DEATH (1978), SI WANG TA (1981) (1981) was released in the USA as GAME OF DEATH II (1979).

  • Acted in many films before he became a famous movies star. His first movies was called THE ORPHIN, and he starred in it at age six.

Quotes
  • "Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, Add what is uniquely your own"
  • "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do."
  • "Simplicity is the last step of art."A teacher is never a giver of truth - he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself. A good teacher is merely a catalyst."
  • 'Enter your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water . Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup , you put water into a bottle, itbecomes thebottle ,youput it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend. Running water never grows stale, so you gotta just keep on flowing.
  • '' He who knows not and knows he knows not, he is a fool: shun him. He who knows not and knows not that he knows not, he is simple: teach him. He who knows and knows he knows, he is wise: follow him.
