NICK NOLTE NEWS AND TRIVIA
  • Hosts meetings at his home to help others deal with alcohol and drug problems. (July 23, 2004)
  • Nolte has been in trouble with the police again after they received complaints about the volume of the star's electric guitar - The actor was informed of his offensive musical outpourings by his teenage son, when the police knocked on his Malibu, California, home. (August 26, 2003)
  • A judge on Friday dismissed as unfounded an anonymous claim that Nolte violated his probation last month for driving under the influence of drugs -- Malibu Superior Court judge Lawrence Mira set another progress hearing for January. (July 19, 2003)
  • In the case of THE GOOD THIEF, Nolte's private struggle against substance abuse helped fuel his performance as a drug-addicted gambler who wants to organize a heist at a casino in the south of France -- Until Nolte was arrested in September, the makers of the film didn't know how closely the character mirrored the life of the actor, who was in the midst of a drug relapse after nearly a decade of sobriety. (April 3, 2003)
  • Nolte says he's been vigilant about remaining sober since his arrest last year for driving under the influence of drugs -- He said the legal troubles and media attention (much of it focused on a mugshot that showed him looking disheveled) prompted him to be open about his recovery. (March 10, 2003)
  • Was the only one not surprised after his shock arrest last year because he knew he was heading for meltdown -- the actor was picked up by police after taking the date rape drug GHB and then driving, but he insists it was the tail end of a lifetime of substance abuse. (January 30, 2003)
  • Nolte faces a month-long wait to face charges for drink driving after failing to show in court yesterday -- the movie star was supposed to be arraigned in a Malibu, California, court yesterday but his trial has been postponed to December 5. (October 31, 2002)
  • Nolte is charged with using "date rape" drug -- a criminal complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court identifies the drug found in Nolte's system as the synthetic depressant Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate, or GHB, a clear liquid chemical which has a history of being used by date rapists to sedate their victims. (October 24, 2002)
  • Nolte has been released on $2,500 bail after being caught weaving into oncoming traffic on Los Angeles' busy Pacific Coast Highway (September 14, 2002)
  • Nolte was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol on Wednesday after a police officer saw the actor's car swerving across a Malibu highway. (September 12, 2002)
  • Nolte delivers a compelling performance in THE GOOD THIEF and his character, Bob Montagnet, easily endears himself to audience despite his criminal bent (September 2002)
  • Nolte and Christopher Walken were both considered for Harrison Ford's role as Han Solo in STAR WARS.
  • Made his big screen debut in RETURN TO MACON COUNTY (1975).
  • In 1962, Nolte was given five years probation for selling fake draft cards.
  • In 1978, Karen Ecklund, his girlfriend of 5 years, sued him for community property and support. He now lives with Vicki Lewis.
  • Was a heavy drinker until 1990. When Katherine Hepburn accused him of falling down drunk in every gutter in town, he replied: I've got a few to go yet.
  • Spent five weeks as a homeless person in preparation for his role in DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS (1986).
  • Gained 50 pounds for his role as Brennan in Q & A (1990)

Quotes
  • After being arrested for drunken driving: "Being out on the road drunk and driving isn't a good thing, and I'm glad I didn't have an accident. I was relieved when the siren came on because I knew it was over - the substance abuse, that is."
  • At the 2000 Cannes film festival, Nolte broke ranks to rage at the "obscene" amounts being paid to actors. He said: "It's sick. I want nothing to do with it."
