SISSY SPACEK NEWS AND TRIVIA
  • Supports Ford Motor Company to continue its recognition of Rosie the Riveter by unveiling Academy Awards historic collection of Rosies' stories and World War II memorabilia on May 20, 2004.
  • Has joined the cast of THE RING 2. (April 20, 2004)
  • Suffering from severe trauma and depression after her son is visciously murdered, Spacek's brooding and sympathetic performance in Bedroom found the actress taking home a Golden Globe for Best Actress, and earning an Oscar nod in the same category
  • Originally aspired to become a singer, and, after heading east to New York, got her start singing at coffee houses in Greenwich Village.
  • Soared to fame as the title character in Stephen King's 1976 movie shocker CARRIE, where she portrayed a homely, unpopular high school student with deadly telekinetic powers. She did such a convincing job in the role that many find it hard to believe that Spacek was selected as the homecoming queen at her high school in Texas. Spacek was also in her mid-20s when she was cast as the adolescent Carrie.
  • In COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER (1980) she and Beverly D'Angelo did all their own singing.
  • Wasn't considered for the role of Carrie in CARRIE (1976) until her husband, Jack Fisk, convinced director Brian de Palma to allow her to audition. Her audition so pleased De Palma that she got the lead role.
  • The pig's blood dumped on her in CARRIE (1976) was karo syrup and food coloring, although she was willing to have real blood dumped on her.
  • Was the original choice for the role of Milena in BAD TIMING (1980).
  • Originally scheduled to play the Debra Winger role in TERMS OF ENDEARMENT (1983).
  • Was offered a cameo in THE RAGE: CARRIE 2 (1999), the sequel to CARRIE (1976) but turned it down. She did, however, give Katt Shea permission to use some of her scenes from Carrie for flashbacks.

Quotes
  • "I had a dozen years to act before starting a family then found that motherhood dwarfed everything else. Once or twice a year, I take a project that appeals to me for its redeeming social value."
  • "My cousin, Rip Torn, persuaded me not to change my name: You shouldn't change what you are in the search for success."
  • "There's a real danger in trying to stay king of the mountain. You stop taking risks, you stop being as creative, because you're trying to maintain a position. Apart from anything else that really takes the fun out of it."
  • "When I started out in independent films in the early 70s, we did everything for the love of art. It wasn't about money and stardom. That was what we were reacting against. You'd die before you'd be bought."
  • About her daughter Schuyler Fisk becoming an actress: "The business has been good to me. I would be a hypocrite if I tried to convince her not to do this."
  • On why she didn't want to appear in THE RAGE: CARRIE 2: "I asked if they could use some backflashes instead. I enjoyed the sequel, but hated my role in the first film. I was awful."
